The “Decision, Not Destiny” Workshop, which we organized online with 8 expert trainers, was conducted with full participation of trainee lawyers from 21 bar associations.

In this workshop, which included both theoretical and practical components, experiential learning, interactive teaching techniques, and structured methods were used. The program was developed based on the following main objectives:

  • To develop basic awareness of gender equality,
  • To raise awareness about the social issue of child, early, and forced marriages,
  • To enable the review and critical re-evaluation of previous decisions
On the first day of training;
  • We covered “Gender in Stories and Fairy Tales” with Solmaz Havuz,
  • “Basic Concepts of Gender” with Fevziye Sayılan,
  • “Gender Within the Scope of Human Rights” with Musa Toprak, and
  • “Lawyers’ Responsibilities in the Context of the Istanbul Convention and Law No. 6284” with Gülriz Uygur.

At the end of the first day, the Z.C. application previously decided by the Constitutional Court was shared with all participants to be revisited the next day, and they were asked: “How would you rewrite this decision from a gender perspective if you were in charge?” Participants worked in small groups.

On the second and final day of training;
  • We discussed “Rights Provided by Laws and Conventions for Women and Children’s Rights, Problems Encountered in Practice, and Solutions” with Atty. Aslı Koçak Arıhan, Head of Ankara Bar Association’s Gelincik Unit,
  • We covered “Gender for Legal Professionals” with Seher Kırbaş Canikoğlu.

After completing the theoretical sections, a “Decision Rewriting Workshop” was conducted with Eylem Ümit Atılgan. In this workshop, the decisions rewritten by participants in groups were examined one by one and evaluated by Eylem Ümit Atılgan.

The workshop concluded with a closing speech by Prof. Dr. Yıldız Ecevit.

We thank everyone again who supported us in the Step by Step Run for Goodness November Marathon 2019.
We will leave child, early, and forced marriages not to destiny, but to the right decisions of legal professionals who believe in gender equality!
