My Dear Flying Broom Diary;
- Hello everyone from the opening night of the Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival… First, I’ll introduce myself, explain the purpose of these days, and then share how the opening night went. I’m Aybüke, a volunteer at the festival, and this is my second year. This year, I’m on the press team. As someone who will be attending every day of the festival, I’ll be writing about how I experienced it, what I heard, and how the audience and guests experienced it. I’d say I’ll be conducting participant observation, a bit like in social sciences. However, I’m attending the festival not for research purposes, but for observation and experience, as someone myself, writing about what I see, what I watch, and what I feel. Since the film reviews will be published later by the press team through the Flying Broom Foundation’s channels, I haven’t included the reviews in this diary. The entries you’ll read are part of the festival diary, which is open to the public.
On opening night, posters from all the Flying Broom festivals held to date adorned the Opera House’s stair railings. As the place slowly began to fill, I began chatting with and meeting our guests. We made sure seats were reserved for our press guests. I greeted Şenay Gürler and Yetkin Dikinciler, the festival’s loyal and cheerful hosts, as soon as they arrived. They were both actors I loved dearly. As I got to know them better and interacted with them, I realized they were even more delightful. Rehearsals took place. The hall filled up quickly, and I was at a loss for words. Everywhere I looked, I saw people I’d seen on screen before, or people behind the scenes whose names I knew. Before the evening’s awards were presented, SesVerSus A Cappella took the stage and prepared us for the awards celebration with their selection of songs. Then, one by one, the awards began to be presented. From what I’ve observed over the past two years, the award-givers are often precious people who have touched the recipients’ lives and with whom they share fond memories. This year, the most beautiful moment of this award-winner-presenter duo was when Bennu Yıldırımlar, one of the recipients of the Bilge Olgaç Honorary Award, received her award from her daughter, Ada Yarar. She had no idea her daughter was coming, so her tickets and transfers had been arranged accordingly. Experiencing such a surprise on stage was both surprising and delightful for Bennu Yıldırımlar. At the end of the evening, the female artists of the Ankara State Classical Turkish Music Choir took the stage. All the guests and the Uçan Süpürge team closed the evening by singing “Kadınlar Vardır” (Women Exist).
